Setting up VPN on Windows XP

We are going to discuss about the setup procedure of PPTP VPN on Windows XP, which is one of the most popular type of VPN service with respect to Windows devices. The setup process is similar to that of other types of protocol networks such as L2TP, IPSec and others. OpenVPN setup procedure is slightly different and a bit complicated. Follow this procedure step by step.

  1. Click on Start icon and go to Control Panel.
  2. Control Panel should be set to Category view and if not, you need to click on ‘Switch to Category View’.
  3. After that, select the option of ‘Network and Internet Connections’.
  4. In the next page, pick the task ‘Create a connection to the network at your workplace’.
  5. You can find ‘Virtual Private Network connection’ in the next page of Network Connection Wizard. Just select this particular option and click on Next to proceed further.
  6. Next page is where you should name your VPN connection. Just enter the name that you would like to give for your VPN connection. Click Next after that.
  7. In the ‘VPN Server Selection’ section you should enter the server address. Remember that all the VPN account particulars will be delivered to you via welcome email, which should be kept confidential. You should enter the account particulars in the respective fields correctly and in case of any mistakes, you will not be able to connect to the VPN server and enjoy the features offered by the connection.
  8. The new VPN connection will be created and a wizard suggesting that will pop up. Make sure to select the option of ‘Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop’ and click on Finish.
  9. Now double click on the name of the VPN connection that has been setup just now.
  10. After that select ‘Properties’ and in the Properties section, click on ‘Security’ to proceed further.
  11. Make sure that the option of ‘require data encryption (disconnect if none) is unchecked. Click Ok after that.
  12. Then click on ‘Networking’ and then set the type of VPN here. You can select the protocol from the drop down menu.
  13. You should then enter the username and password in the next section. You will receive it in the welcome email. You can set your own password after the first login.
  14. Click on ‘Connect’ after this pr ocess.

You can now enjoy VPN on Windows XP on your PC and laptop. You can disconnect the VPN connection by simply selecting the VPN. Right click on the status and click on Disconnect.
